Alsco Gives a Hand Up to the Hilton Head Community

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – When Hurricane Matthew landed on the East Coast in October 2016, South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island was particularly hard hit—the storm and widespread flooding caused many islanders to evacuate and the electricity was off for days after the storm. Many returned to damaged homes with spoiled food and faced expensive home repairs, not to mention loss of work and income. To help struggling island residents continue to recover from Hurricane Matthew, the Alsco Charleston branch recently made a charitable donation of $1,000 to the Deep Well Project, which provides emergency assistance to residents of Hilton Head Island, such as food, temporary housing, and repairs.

“Seeing the local community in so much need after the hurricane, we wanted to do something to help,” said Ryan Barry, General Manager, Alsco Charleston branch. “Deep Well Project seemed like a good fit – an organization that could provide the type of emergency assistance needed by many of these families after the devastating effects of the hurricane.”

Donations like Alsco’s enable the Deep Well Project to provide direct assistance to Hilton Head islanders—ensuring that those who need food or temporary shelter or repairs or other assistance could go home and carry on.

About Deep Well Project: Founded in 1973, the Deep Well Project is an “angel charity” that operates as a predominantly volunteer-based non-profit dedicated to helping the Hilton Head Island community. Initially, the organization served the local community suffering from water contamination due to shallow wells, so it was called the Deep Well Project. Over the decades, services expanded to meet a variety of needs, such as responding during the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Today the Deep Well Project provides assistance in emergency situations of many kinds as a “hand up, not a hand out” for islanders in Hilton Head. Over 90% of contributions go directly to program services. For more information or to donate to the Deep Well Project, visit www.deepwellproject.org/hurricane-matthew-recovery.
